Ive heard that cats canget kitty aids. Is this something I can test for, and is there avaccine available? -Cat Lover Dear Reader, The term, kitty aids, is what is commonly used to describe twoviruses that infect cats, known as Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) andFeline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). Although these viruses aresomewhat different, infection with either one of them lead to anuntimely death in cats. Recent estimates indicate that 2-4 % of catsin the U.S. harbor one or both of these two viruses.FeLV is usually spread when an uninfected cat comes in contact with thesaliva or urine of an infected cat. This could be when grooming eachother or sharing litter boxes. FIV, on the other hand, is most oftenspread when an infected cat bites an uninfected cat.It is important to mention that FeLV and FIV CANNOT be transmitted tohumans, and HIV cannot be transmitted to cats from humans.Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) just does what its name implies:makes the immune system deficient. This virus is in the same family ofviruses as the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (which causes AIDS).Common signs of FIV infection include inflammation of the mouth, inflammation of the middle layer of the eye, and cancers. Otherfrequent consequences include chronic skin infections, persistentdiarrhea, urinary tract problems, respiratory tract infections, andneurologic disorders. There is a simple blood test that is performed at most veterinaryclinics to detect the presence of these viruses in cats. The test candetect the presence of FeLV antigens (part of the virus itself), andFIV antibodies (the cats immune cells made against the virus).Because the FIV portion of the test detects antibodies, it is importantto know whether your cat has ever had an FIV vaccine. This would alsocause the cat to have antibodies against FIV even though not infected.A positive test does not immediately warrant euthanasia for cats thatappear healthy. These viruses can lay dormant in the body for years, and cats can live relatively long lives even when positive for FeLV orFIV. The main concern is to keep them away from other cats.Once a cat has tested negative for FeLV and FIV, vaccines can be given. Commonly, an FeLV vaccine is given during the first series of shotsfor kittens. When vaccinating adult cats, they will need two vaccines3 weeks apart, and then yearly boosters. The FIV vaccine is not ascommonly used due to decreased efficacy. There are limited treatment options for these viral infections, soprevention is the key. It is very important to test any new cat thatcomes into your household before it has any exposure to your cats. -Dr. Jolene Birney + , . 6 = > C D E F G X Y Z ьиЦьЖІvЦaЦPB1 h2 h2 CJ OJ QJ ^J aJ hx[Г CJ OJ QJ ^J aJ hZ hZ CJ OJ QJ ^J aJ )h;C hЩaS B*CJ OJ QJ ^J aJ ph h"rт 6B*OJ QJ ^J ph hЩaS 6B*OJ QJ ^J ph hёMШ 6B*OJ QJ ^J ph h6 6B*OJ QJ ^J ph hш*ў 6B*OJ QJ ^J ph #hЩaS B*CJ OJ QJ ^J aJ ph &hёMШ 5B*CJ$ OJ QJ ^J aJ$ ph &hЩaS 5B*CJ$ OJ QJ ^J aJ$ ph , - .
